The Freedom of Esera Tualo

Esera Tualo is a former defensive lineman in the NFL (National Football League). For the whole nine years of his career as an athlete, he was an esteemed football player who was able to reach through the Super Bowl together with the Atlanta Falcons. Being a go to guy in the field, he was able to tackle with some of the legendary football players such as Brett Farve, Jack Del Rio, and John Randle. He became a part of five various teams with the Minnesota Vikings being his last before he went for retirement. 

The way of life of professional football is seen as a frenzy of masculinity. Because of this, Tualo put his true sexual orientation out of the many people’s sight. Unbeknownst to many he was being tormented by his hidden sexuality. It threatened to cripple him by drowning himself to oblivion with excessive alcohol intake. The dilemma of becoming a very good player arise with the looming fear of being found out as a homosexual which resulted to him hindering himself from achieving much in the game of football.

Total Freedom

The double life he was leading took its toll on him making him deeply depressed. It was such a difficult time for him for the inner battle was so strong. He wanted to follow his mother’s example by maintaining a strong spiritual faith but at the same time felt that he is a sinner because of his deviant sexual orientation. At the time of his retirement, he soon got tired of playing the bitter role of being a “straight” guy. He finally ended the pretense by coming out in the open. Gladly, his confession earned numerous supports from the people around him including his former teammates, friends, family members, and even from the media.

As the burden is lifted from his shoulders, he now brings his story to the public without even a hint of intimidation. He serves as an inspiration to many others who are skeptical about coming out for fear that they will be ostracized.

Now that he has quit running in the Super Bowl, he lives in the suburban of Minneapolis together with his partner Mitchell Wherley and along with their two children, Mitchell and Michelle. The gay couple adopted the twins. He also has intentions of pursuing a career in acting and singing.
